A Qualitative Study on Children¡¯s Experience of Maltreatment
Ju So-Young

Abstract
This study was intended to examine how children perceive and experience maltreatments. Qualitative analyses were carried out on data derived from in-depth interviews of 21 children aged between 9 and 12 who experienced maltreatments. According to the results, the children perceived that maltreatments were caused by their mistakes or misfortune of their families. They were caught in a vicious circle of reoccurrence of maltreatment. The results confirmed that the children held feeling of isolation and attachment, in a distorted sense, to their parents who had committed maltreatments, thinking that they should do something for bright future and happiness of their families. The results imply that it is crucial to understand child maltreatment in terms of children¡¯s efforts to survive and adjust and that a safety net should be established in the community that can provide substantial help for children in trouble.
